How it Happened
Besides the performance by Tower and Walsh in the derby, the Dawgs were paced by Bradley Wood (Northern Ill) and Mike Coggeshall (Assumption) who both went 3-for-5 at the plate, Friday night. Eddie Santiago (Mitchell) had a stellar outing for Wachusett, pitching the first 6.0 innings of the game, allowing just two hits, and striking out seven. On the back end, Joe Simeone (UConn) pitched a perfect ninth and tenth inning with three strikeouts.
Wachusett jumped out to the early lead in the top of the first inning, as Wood scampered home on a passed ball to give the Dirt Dawgs the early lead. Worcester came back in the bottom half of the inning as they plated two runs on a hit by pitch and a sacrifice fly to center field.
After that run was scored in the bottom of the first, Santiago retired 18 of the last 20 batters he faced, before being lifted.
In the fourth inning, the Dirt Dawgs tied the game up at 2-2, when Jack Gethings (Fairfield) doubled home Nolan Kessinger (UMass Amherst).
