BRISTOL, Conn. - Just like the Major League All-Star Game, there was more defense highlights then offensive, as the East takes down the West All-Stars in the 2017 Futures Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game at Muzzy Field in Bristol, Conn.
The Basics
Score: East All-Stars 2, West All-Stars 0
Homerun Derby
Worcester's Joe Caico (New Haven) got the Derby started with six longballs, Bristol's Jayson Gonzalez (Vanderbilt) took the lead with 12 homers. Zack Tower (Franklin Pierce) nearly took the lead with 11 of his own to sit in second place. Ben Maycock (UConn) of the host Bristol Blues knocked out three homers. Don Walsh (Post) stepped to the plate as the reigning FCBL Homerun Derby Champion, and left the batter's box with 16 dingers to his credit to head into the final round in first place.
In the finals, Gonzalez launched 15 setting the bar high for the reigning champ. Walsh gave it all, but he could only muster six in the championship round.
All-Star Game
Andrew Bene (Shippensburg), Jack Gethings (Fairfield), and Tower got the start in the field for the Western Division.
Eddie Santiago (Mitchell) pitched the second inning, collected a strikeout and induced a groundout to end the inning. Jon Gegetskas (Westfield State) took the third inning, picked up two strikeouts against four batters. Mike Demarest (Adephi) picked up just one out in the fifth inning. Joe Simeone (UConn) pitched a perfect eight inning for the Western All-Stars, including striking out the last batter.
All of the offense came from the East All-Stars, who got on the board in the top of the fourth inning, as Joe Silva (Concordia) hit a two run homer to right field.
