LEOMINSTER, Mass. -Brockton managed to silence the Wachusett offense and sweep the Dirt Dawgs in the season series finale in two close contest. The Rox took game one with at 7-1 final, but game two was decided 1-0 in the Rox favor, Saturday Night at Doyle Field.

How it Happened

Game One - Brockton 7, Wachusett 1

In the first game, the Dirt Dawgs were led by Mike Coggeshall (Assumption) and Bradley Wood (Northern Ill) who both went 2-for-3 at the plate. On the mount, Dan Southerland (Wheaton) got the start for the home team, going 4.0 inning, allowing just four hits and one earned run, while striking out five.

The Rox struck first in the top of the second inning, as Nick Garland (Central Connecticut) lifted a leadoff homerun to give Brockton the early lead. Wachusett would tie the contest in the home half of the fifth inning, as Coggeshall scored on a sacrifice fly to center field from Nolan Kessinger (UMass Amherst).

The game would remained tied until the top of the eighth inning, as the Rox plated six runs to take the lead. Brockton would score two runs on a single and an error by the Dawgs second baseman, while the bases would clear the next batter with a grand slam from Chris Berry (North Florida).

Game Two - Brockton 1, Wachusett 0

Coggeshall continued to be locked in at the plate as he went 3-for-3 at bat. Nick Dombkowski (Hartford) made his Dirt Dawgs debut in relief for the club, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing just two hits, while striking out four batters.

The Rox jumped out to the early lead in the top of the first, as Joe Silva (Concordia) scored on a two out base hit. Besides the opening inning, neither team could get any offense going as both pitching staffs struck out 10 batters in the seven inning game.

Inside the Numbers

  • This is the first time this season that the Dirt Dawgs has been swept in a doubleheader, and only the second time that they have been shutout all summer.

The Dirt Dawgs hit the road tomorrow as they head up to Portsmouth, NH to take on the Seacoast Mavericks tomorrow for 4:00pm first pitch. Brockton returns to Campanelli Stadium as they play host to the Nashua Silver Knights for a 4:05pm start time tomorrow afternoon.
