Trenton too much for Powassan in Day 1 play of Dudley-Hewitt Cup

TRENTON, Ont. – The host Trenton Golden Hawks (OJHL) got a pair of goals from Liam Morgan to help lead his side to a convincing 5-1 victory over the Powassan Voodoos (NOJHL) Tuesday evening in Day 1 play at the Dudley-Hewitt Cup Central Canadian Jr. A Championship at Duncan McDonald Memorial Community Gardens in Trenton, Ont.

The defending DHC champion Golden Hawks were the first in flight in this one as Morgan’s innocent-looking backhand from the left side fooled Voodoos’ starter Nate McDonald as he was beat short side at 3:43.

Trenton added another, via the power play, later in the frame set-up by defenceman Josh Allan, who kept a clearing attempt in that led to a Jeremy Pullara shot that was saved by McDonald, but the rebound went right to an open Anthony Sorrentino, who whipped his chance into the open side.

Action in the middle stanza saw the home side tack on one more six minutes into the session with McDonald making two point-blank saves, but he could not stop a third opportunity as Morgan picked up his second of the night from close range to make it 3-0.

The Golden Hawks then struck in the waning moments of the frame as Dawson Baker sent a cross-ice pass over to Rex Moe, who scored just as time was expiring as his buzzer-beater put the OJHL finalists up by four heading into the third.  

Powassan put an end to Trenton’s Chris Janzen’s shutout bid with 3:41 remaining as Parker Bowman buried his own rebound to pick up his club’s first DHC tally.

The Golden Hawks then rounded out the night’s scoring with 75 seconds to go as Max Ewart used a defender as a screen then snapped one high over the glove of McDonald to finish things off.

Pullara finished with three assists on the night  to aid the winner's offensive cause.

Janzen made 25 stops on the night to record the win for Trenton while McDonald faced 35 attempts in defeat as he and the Voodoos suffered their first setback of the postseason with the loss.

Earning their club’s respective player of the game laurels was Morgan of the Golden Hawks and McDonald for the Voodoos.

Powassan will looks to regroup Wednesday in their second contest at the DHC as they take on the Dryden GM Ice Dogs (1-0) (SIJHL) at 2:30 p.m. with the SIJHL champion GM Ice Dogs rallying to surprise the OJHL-winning Georgetown Raiders (0-0-1) 5-4 in overtime in the initial contest of the four-team event earlier Tuesday.

Trenton (1-0) meanwhile takes on rival Georgetown Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
