Cobras hit road for second-round series

Date:  Source: Butte Cobras

Last week, the Butte Cobras won a playoff series for the first time in the history of the young franchise.

This weekend, they’ll try to repeat history when they head to Medford, Oregon, to take on the Southern Oregon Spartans in the second round of the Thorne Cup Playoffs.

The puck drops at 8:30 p.m. (MST) Friday for the opener. Saturday’s game is also at 8:30, while Sunday’s game, if necessary, begins at 1:30 p.m.

Thanks to the two playoff victories, the Cobras (34-18-2) have won more games than the Spartans (33-15-4). Southern Oregon, though placed second — one spot ahead of Butte — in the Northwest Division Standings and earned a first-round playoff bye.

The Cobras took four out of six regular-season games against the Spartans.

Forward Chris Seto leads the Spartans and ranks third in the Western States Hockey League, with 111 points. He has scored a league-leading 62 goals.

Butte wing Peter Panacek has registered 33 goals and 97 points. That includes Sunday’s goal with 5.6 seconds left that lifted the Cobras to a 3-2 series-clinching win over the Bellingham Blaze at the Butte Community Ice Center.

Forward Jan Marcilis has a team-best 45 goals. He has racked up 96 points. Wing Augusts Veindenbaums has checked in with 35 goals and 75 points for coach Ty Smith’s Cobras.
