FireAntz fall in 1-0 hole with playoff-opening loss to Pen...
Date: Apr 12, 2017

The FireAntz came into the weekend sporting the best home record in the SPHL having won 9 of their last 10 in the Crown Complex. Fayetteville played host to the Knoxville Ice Bears over the weekend who were right on their tail in the season standings. Friday night also marked the honoring of former Fayetteville player Rob Sich, as his number 67 was raised to the rafters joining Mike Fournier and Chad Collins.
The season series between the two teams had been incredibly close, with three of the last four meetings being decided past regulation. Friday proved to be no different as the scoring was started by Trevor Fleurent off of a tipped clearing attempt by John Rey. Fleurent had been signed just that morning from the University of New England and scored in his first professional game. Jake Hauswirth scored just two minutes later to give the FireAntz a solid lead early in the game.
The FireAntz held a 3-1 lead for most of the third period until Trevor Hertz scored two goals just a few minutes apart to send the game into overtime. About 90 seconds into the overtime period, Tayler Thompson's shot deflected off of Brian Billett's pads and Nick Rivait was there for the finisher to give the FireAntz their third overtime win of the season 4-3. With Sean Bonar out due to illness, Tyler Green also picked up his second win in a FireAntz uniform.
On Saturday, Sean Bonar was back between the pipes for the FireAntz as they looked to sweep the weekend once again at home. The game played out in similar fashion right from the get go as Trevor Fleurent made it two goals in two professional games with a terrific shot from the near side circle. Former FireAntz player Berkley Scott made it a tie game at one to close to first period. The rest of the FireAntz offense would be taken care of by Brad Drobot and Jake Hauswirth with Bobby Chaumont adding an empty net goal.
Bonar got his 28th win which ties the SPHL record for goaltender victories set by Max Strang and Terry Denike. Fayetteville has now won 6 games in a row and are just a single point out of first place. They will take to the road this upcoming weekend against last place Evansville before coming back home to play the Macon Mayhem.
