FireAntz fall in 1-0 hole with playoff-opening loss to Pen...
Date: Apr 12, 2017

The top three teams in the SPHL standings had an opportunity to clinch their positions in the President's Cup playoffs this weekend, and the FireAntz faced off against one of them to begin their three in three weekend. The Huntsville Havoc were looking for their revenge from a 7-1 loss on Fayetteville's Military Night back on February 17th.
Kristaps Nimanis began the scoring with a wonderful point shot that found its way past goaltender Adam Courchaine. Less than a minute later, Huntsville would tie it up thanks to a goal from Eric Witzel. Witzel would then assist on the next two Huntsville goals, scored by Ben Kramer and newcomer Eddie Nolan. The second period would remain the difference as even Brandon Lubin's power play goal at the end of the second frame couldn't do enough to get the FireAntz a victory.
On Saturday, the Fayetteville offense showed why they have the best power play in the SPHL. The captain Bobby Chaumont got the scoring started and league leader Tayler Thompson made it a two goal lead just under two minutes later. That lead held despite the FireAntz getting outshot 18 to 9 in the first period. Bobby Chaumont made it a multi goal game in the second period and Mark Corbett added an empty netter to seal a 4-1 Fayetteville in a game that was much more aggressive in nature than Friday. The two teams combined for 46 penalty minutes with Kristaps Nimanis receiving a suspension from the league pending an appeal.
Sunday proved to feature a sight that FireAntz fans hadn't seen in a long time. Tyler Green started between the pipes against the Columbus Cottonmouths, marking the first time since December 3rd that Sean Bonar had not started a game. Another unusual sight was Brad Drobot starting the scoring unassisted when he charged the net and poked home a rebound past Spencer Bacon. After Zach Loesch tied the game 5 minutes into the second period, the Antz offense came alive with Joe Kalisz and Max Cook scoring at even strength and Bobby Chaumont giving the Antz a three goal lead short handed.
A pair of power play goals by Petr Senkerik in the third kept the game interesting, but the FireAntz held on to win. They are now just one victory away from clinching a spot in the SPHL playoffs for the second year in a row. This weekend the Antz will play host to the hottest team in the SPHL, the Peoria Rivermen who also have reigning SPHL player of the week Storm Phaneuf.
