FireAntz fall in 1-0 hole with playoff-opening loss to Pen...
Date: Apr 12, 2017

Three games in as many days has become a common theme for the FireAntz in the month of February. So far, they haven't looked worse for the wear, as shown by an 8 game winning streak and cosistently play from the offense and goaltender. This past weekend, the FireAntz would have their toughest test by going up against the top two teams in the SPHL standings.
On Friday, the Huntsville Havoc made their first trip to the Crown Complex this season sporting the SPHL's top record and a long list of skilled players who can light the lamp. None of those statistics mattered as soon as the game started. Fayetteville exploded for 5 goals in the first period alone, all of them minutes apart. Christian Horn was the one multi goal scorer, and Jake Hauswirth scored his league leading 11th power play goal of the season as part of a 7-1 final in front of the largest home crowd of the year on Military Appreciation Night.
The very next day, the FireAntz took to the road to face the second place Macon Mayhem, a team they had been 2-3-1 against so far. Once again it was a story of one period making all of the difference for the Antz. After a scoreless first, Fayetteville got goals from Max Cook, Bobby Chaumont and Evan Dixon after getting down early to start the period. Dennis Sicard squared off with Nick Rivait in a spirited battle, but his fists and Macon's 13-2 shot advantage in the third period weren't enough to break the Antz.
Sunday proved that the Mayhem were due to provide just what their name is. They hopped out to an early 3-0 lead thanks to goals by Matt Summers, Jake Trask and Collin MacDonald. Goals from the recently activated Justin Hussar and Joe Kalisz got the FireAntz back in the game in the second period, but not much went right from there. Sean Bonar let two more Macon goals slip by him, and the frustration boiled over before the final whistle.
With about 5:30 minutes to go, there was a large scrum behind the Fayetteville net with several players going after one another. Brad Campagna, Nick Rivait, Daniel Gentzler and Stephen Pierog all received double minors for roughing and filled the sin bin. Despite probably their roughest loss of the season, the FireAntz have still managed to win 10 of their last 12 games and have put themselves in a solid playoff position. This weekend they will be on the road again to face Knoxville and Columbus before returning home February 28th against the often formidable Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs.
