Saturday Recap: A Hot Second Period Fuels Victory

Date:  Source: Fayetteville FireAntz

The FireAntz scored 3 goals in the second period and Knoxville couldn't match their pace as the ended the Ice Bears' home winning streak in front of a sold out crowd.

Fayetteville started the scoring in the first period, when Christian Horn picked up a failed clearing attempt and gave it to Evan Dixon who put a shot past goaltender Brian Billet. The game remained that way until the second period when the FireAntz scored 3 goals in a span of just over 3 minutes.

Tayler Thompson scored off a turnover at the 4:58 mark courtesy of another Knoxville turnover, and Max Cook made it a two goal lead off of a great 2 on 1 chance. After Cook's goal, Knoxville's goaltender was crashed into and he would not return to the game, forcing Dylan Wells to come off of the bench. Just 17 seconds later, Thompson hit twine again to complete his first multi goal game until October.

Although Kyle McNeil and Andrew Bonazza ended Sean Bonar's bid for a 4th shutout on the season, the FireAntz stayed cool and collected to seal a 5-2 victory with Bobby Chaumont adding the empty netter. Fayetteville is now within 5 points of Knoxville in the SPHL standings, two spots away from being a team with home ice advantage in the playoffs.

The FireAntz will have a few days rest before taking to the road to face the Columbus Cottonmouths on February 2nd. For the next two days after that, they will be back in the Crown Complex to take on the Evansville Thunderbolts.
