NEW DIRECTION FOR THE CLARINGTON EAGLES!
Date: Aug 12, 2021

The Port Perry MoJacks rode a five goal first period wave to cap off a three win weekend on Sunday with a 6-3 victory over the Little Britain Merchants. The Jacks outscored their opponents 20-7 in the three contests to remain unbeaten in the 2016-17 season through 16 games. After dispatching Georgina in Sutton 8-3 on Friday night, the MoJacks swept a home-and-home with Little Britain, starting with a 6-1 road win on Saturday.
Several MoJacks remained on hot streaks, but none more impressive than Graham Lamers. Last season’s leading goal scorer now has tallied six goals in his last five games, including two in the opening frame on Sunday to kickstart the attack.
The first came on the powerplay when Liam Schweda made a tape-to-tape pass through the neutral zone to defenceman Adam Turner, who quickly relayed the puck to Lamers who was cutting to the net with speed. He beat Merchants starter Chad Callaghan with a quick shot to give the Jacks the lead. They never looked back.
Soon after it was Lamers who broke in on a 2-on-1 with Jordan McCullough. He froze the defenceman before slipping a sneaky pass across the crease for McCullough to tap in for his fifth of the year, and a two goal lead for the home team.
Lamers potted his second goal at the 10:27 mark. Schweda blasted a shot on goal from the point, and this time McCullough returned the favour by snapping the rebound over to Lamers who was waiting on the far post. That marked the end of the afternoon for Callaghan, who exited after giving up three goals on 10 shots.
The MoJacks kept up the pressure though, and a few seconds later, it was the Pork & Beans line rudely welcoming the Merchants Adam Harris to the party. Mitchell Gustavsen found Toby Cooper cruising over the Merchants blue line, and Cooper ripped a rocket into the top of the net to once again send the home fans into an uproar.
Cooper wasn’t quite done though, as he scored his second of the afternoon, and tenth of the season a few minutes later. With the Jacks buzzing around the Merchants zone, Gustavsen feathered a feed back to Dan Harris at the point. Harris let a quick shot go which
Cooper deftly deflected in the slot to open up a five goal bulge.
The MoJacks added one more in the middle frame when Port Perry’s own Chris Polito notched his third of the season on a nice feed from Brady Martin. The Merchants made things competitive by scoring three times in the frame, but they could get no closer.
Port Perry now gets set for a stiff test on the weekend. On Saturday night, the Jacks will be on the road in Apsley to battle the North Kawartha Knights before hosting rivals Uxbridge on Sunday afternoon at Scugog Arena at 2:25. The Knights a one of the Orr Division’s hottest teams recently. On Tuesday of this week, Lakefield ended what had been a six game winning streak for the Knights, which propelled them two points past Uxbridge to take over fourth place.
Of note Mitchell Gustavsen will miss the game Saturday night in Apsley after a donnybrook in the second period of the Little Britain game versus Merchants newcomer Nick Thomakos. Tyler Hutchinson will also serve the second of his two game ban. The MoJacks line up will get a boost however with forward Todd McNair set to make his season debut after recovering from a shoulder injury. He will likely skate with Jordan McCullough and Ian Elkins which promises to be a gritty hard working line designed to forecheck hard and cycle the puck in the opponent’s zone. The MoJacks and the Port Hope Panthers remain the only two undefeated teams in the PJHL East.
