The Cape Cod Islanders opened the 2016 season on the road and earned two hard fought victories.  On Friday night the Islanders travelled to Canton, Mass to face off against the Northeast Generals.  The tightly contested game was scoreless until the 9:30 mark of the third period when newcomer Tyler Gillen finished off a 2 on 1 break collecting a nifty pass from linemate Nash Braun and ripping a shot glove side beating Generals goalie Leo Lake.  The play was created by Jack Conway, off a turn over in the neutral zone and was able to spring Braun and Gillen on the odd man rush.  Anton Zemba stopped all 37 shots he faced earning the shutout en route to his fist win of the season.  "I was pleased to get the win and the two points."  head coach Jay Punsky said  "It was only the first game and we have a long way to go to get to where we need to be, but I saw a lot of positves tonight.  Zemba getting the shutout was great, he made some great saves out there."

On Sunday the Islanders travelled to Biddeford,Maine to face the Maine Wild.  The Islanders came out flat but were able to grab a 2-1 lead after the first period on goals by captain Chuck Costello and veteran Mitch Eldridge.  The Wild were determined and tied the contest at 2 heading into the second intermission.  The Isanders came out with a purpose in the third scoring four goals in the frame on their way to a 6-3 victory.  Jake Davis scored on the power play and Eldridge netted his second of the game. First year goalie Ryan Clifford picked up his first win in net.  "I thought we were flat today, we didn't come out the way we should have. But Clifford kept us close and gave us the chance to win heading into the third.  We are a young team with some first year players, we have to know that there are no nights off at this level.  It was defitnitely good to see our vets step up and score some goals today."
