Date: Sep 25, 2016
AMARILLO, TX – The Amarillo Bulls will face three new opponents and a few familiar faces at next month’s North American Hockey League Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota.
The Bulls take on two teams from the Central Division, one from the Midwest and another from the Eastern Division during the four-day event from September 21st to 24 at the Schwann Super Rink.
For scouting purposes, the NAHL Showcase is the premier event of its kind and is a yearly gathering for every NCAA program and NHL team as they get their first look at some of the best and brightest hockey talent North America has to offer. Last season over 350 NHL, NCAA and junior scouts attended the event.
Celebrating its 41st season in 2016-17, the NAHL is the oldest junior hockey league of its kind in the United States and one of only two that operate under the USA Hockey non pay-to-play model. The NAHL is also one of the best at advancing players to collegiate and/or professional hockey. During the last two seasons, over 480 NAHL players have made NCAA commitments, including a record number of 254 NCAA commitments during the 2015-16 season, and close to 100 alumni were playing in the NHL this past season.
The Schwan Super Rink is the largest ice arena of its kind in the world. The state-of-the-art facility, a $21 million project totaling over 300,000 square feet, features eight sheets of ice under one roof. With all its varied amenities and services, the Schwan Super Rink is absolutely unique in the world of ice sport facilities.
By the time The Showcase gets underway, the Bulls will have three regular season games under their belt. The Showcase opens Wednesday, Sept. 21 when the Bulls take on the Brookings Blizzard for the first time ever. The Blizzard is coached by Dan Daikawa who the Bulls face several years ago during the Robertson Cup National Championship Tournament when he was with the former Jamestown program. The game faces off at 7 pm in Schwann Rink No. 2, a familiar place where the Bulls have began many of the events.
On the 2nd day, the Bulls have a date with the East Division New Jersey Titans at 5:15 pm at the Schwann Rink No. 1. The only other opponents the Bulls have faced from the East are the Johnstown Tomahawks (2014-15) and the Aston Rebels (2015-16).
A familiar face greets the Bulls on Day 3 when Scott Langer and his new Aberdeen Wings hit the ice in Prime Time at 8:15 pm on Schwann Rink No. 1. Langer was the former coach of the Topeka RoadRunners and there have been some classic battles and memorable match-ups, including the NAHL South Division Championship Series as well as Robertson Cup National Tournament. Langer begins his first season as bench boss of the Wings.
The North American Hockey League Showcase wraps up on Saturday, Sept. 24th when the Bulls face the Janesville Jets at 12:30 pm also on Schwann Rink No. 1.
Fans can tune into all of the action on CBS Sports Radio 1440, online at www.amarillobulls.com and on PPV with Fast Hockey with pre-game coverage 20 minutes before the face off. Denis J. Puska returns for his 7th season behind the microphone of the Bulls and record 11th season in the Texas Panhandle.
