Chatham rolls over St. Thomas, 5-2

The Chatham Maroons were firing on all cylinders against the St. Thomas Stars, and when the final buzzer sounded Maroons emerged with a 5-2 win.

The win gave Chatham a 2-0 lead in the best of seven series.

The Maroons' penalty kill excelled, as Chatham gave up zero goals despite allowing nine power plays.

The Maroons were paced by Steven Beenackers, who grabbed one goal. Beenackers scored on the power play 14:36 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Chatham. Chatham had taken the advantage when St. Thomas' Isaac McLean got sent off for hooking. Dede Cato picked up the assist.

The Maroons stifled the Stars' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Chatham forced St. Thomas goalie Nikolas Dampier to work between the pipes, taking 34 shots.

Chatham also got points from Austin Thompson, who also tallied two goals and one assist to lead the team in points and Ross Krieger, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Chatham also got a goal from Connor McKinnon as well. More assists for Chatham came via Devin Panzeca, who had one and Gus Ford and Ian Faubert, who contributed two each.

The Stars were helped by Ethan Nother, who registered one goal. Nother scored 11:14 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Andrew Chambers provided the assist. Matt McJannet also scored for St. Thomas. Other players who recorded assists for St. Thomas were Lucas Mastroianni, Nathan Ferris, and Carson Brookshaw, who each chipped in one.

Brendan Johnston made 25 saves for the Maroons on 27 shots. Chatham incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. St. Thomas' Dampier stopped 29 shots out of the 34 that he faced. The Stars incurred 26 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
