FAIRBANKS—The Fairbanks Ice Dogs were missing a few teeth, but they didn’t miss another win against the Springfield Jr. Blues this North American Hockey League season.
The Ice Dogs swept the visitors from the Illinois capital with a 4-2 victory on Saturday night in the Big Dipper Ice Arena.
Ryner Gorowsky and linemate Logan Coomes each had a goal and two assists, and fellow linemate Todd Burgess contributed a goal and an assist for Fairbanks, which raised its Midwest Division and league-leading record to 39-7-3 for 81 points.
“It was obviously a harder game because it was our sixth time playing them,’’ said Burgess, a center and the top scorer in the Tier II Junior A league. “We did the little things right today and that was really the key of our success.”
Fairbanks, which was coming off a 2-1 overtime victory in Friday’s contest, leads the season series at 6-0-0. Friday’s loss for Springfield counts as a tie in the standings because the game went to overtime.
Said Ice Dogs head coach Trevor Stewart of Saturday’s game, “We gave up a lot more, Gavin was good in the net. Both of our goaltenders were really good this weekend and they bailed us out of some tight situations.”
CJ Boothe registered 20 saves for the Ice Dogs on Friday and Gavin Nieto assured the sweep with 28 saves before a crowd of 2,242 on Saturday.
“Some of our best players stepped up and were our best players, i.e. Todd,’’ Stewart added about Saturday’s win. “So, whenever they’re your best players usually things are going to fall into place for your team to have success.”
Though the outcomes each night this weekend in the Dipper favored the Ice Dogs, there were stark contrasts between the games.
Friday’s contest featured 42 minutes, 33 seconds of scoreless play and just two penalties for the entire 63 minutes, 14 seconds of the game.
Saturday’s game gave the penalty-box doors a workout, as the teams combined for 46 minutes worth of infractions. The Ice Dogs had seven for 14 minutes and the Jr. Blues were assessed 11 for 46 minutes, including a misconduct and game ejection for Tony Zasowski for abuse of officials with 37 seconds left in the game.
Two Ice Dogs also were missing teeth after the game — Gorowsky minus one and center Tyler Tomberlin minus two.
Gorowsky, a right wing and the No. 2 scorer in the Tier II Junior A league, lost his tooth after giving Fairbanks a 3-1 lead with a shot from the left circle at 40 seconds into the second period. Linemates Burgess, a center, and Coomes, a left wing, assisted on the only score of the period.
“They were not really keeping their sticks down, they caught me high,” Gorowsky said of the missing tooth, which was knocked out while he was in the right circle.
Gorowsky, with 26 goals and 44 assists for 70 points in 48 games, caught Jr. Blues goaltender Niko Della Maggorie by surprise.
“I saw a lot of traffic in front of the net, so I knew the goalie was screened,’’ Gorowsky said. “I took a shot and then I got a nice little blow to the face.”
Coomes, the league’s No. 3 scorer with 24-38-62 totals in 47 games, provided the game’s first goal with a shot from the top of the right circle. Coomes’ marker at 4:06 of the opening period was set up defenseman Aaron McPheters and Gorowsky.
Josh Bell tied it at 1 for Springfield at 11:21 of the first, taking Brady Tomiak’s team-high 26th assist and wrapping the puck around Nieto’s left skate.
Left wing Liam Stirtzinger’s 14th goal of the season put Fairbanks in front 2-1 at 12:59. Ryan Kero and Cayden Cahill helped on the go-ahead marker.
Jeff Skinner, with help from fellow Springfield forward Luke Radetic, stuffed a puck past Nieto at the edge of the right crease to cut Fairbanks’ lead to 3-2 at 2 minutes into the the third period.
Burgess delivered the weekend’s only power-play goal during a 5-on-3 scenario at 8:06 of the third period. Gorowsky and Coomes assisted Burgess, who has 79 points from 32 goals and 47 assists in 49 games this season.
Della Maggorie finished with 27 saves for the Jr. Blues, who maintained third place in the Midwest at 25-17-6 for 56 points.
The Ice Dogs and Jr. Blues rekindle their rivalry this Friday and Saturday in the Nelson Center in Springfield.
