ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Junior outfielder Kelly Kapp(Freeburg, Ill./Gibault Catholic) has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week according to an announcement by the league office Monday afternoon.
Kapp continued her hot hitting, by going 13-for-19 (.684) at the plate at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial in Kennesaw, Ga. She had multiple hits in all five games, including five consecutive hits at one point, as she raised her season average to .611. Kapp scored eight runs during the weekend, boasting an impressive .700 on base percentage and getting on base to lead off an inning 71 percent of the time.
On the bases, Kapp collected five steals on five attempts to push her league-leading season total to 10. Kapp opened the week with a 2-for-4 effort with three runs and a stolen base against Morehead State. In Saturday’s doubleheader at Kennesaw State, she was 6-for-7 with three runs and three stolen bases as she followed up a 2-for-3 along with a stolen base in a 1-0 loss to the Owls with a 4-for-4 effort with three runs and two steals to lead Bradley to a 6-1 victory as the Braves snapped a six-game Kennesaw St. win streak.
Kapp helped highlight a 9-8 win over Bowling Green Sunday morning by going 3-for-4 with one run and a steal before capping the weekend with a 2-for-4 outing with a run vs. Rutgers later that day.
Through 10 games, she is second in the MVC in batting average (.611) and leads the Valley in both hits (22) and stolen bases (10). Kapp is second in the conference in runs (12) and her .632 on base percentage is third overall.
Last season, she led the MVC in hits (76) and stolen bases (31) to become just the second player in league history with 75 hits and 30 steals in a season. Kapp is now fifth in school history 42 career stolen bases. She has multiple hits in nine of 10 games this season and 14 of the last 16 overall dating back to last season, hitting 39-for-66 (.591) with 23 runs and 19 stolen bases during that 16-game span.
Bradley softball is back in action this weekend at the Renegade Classic in Tallahassee, Fla., opening up tournament play Friday at 11 a.m. (CST) against UAB.
