Date: Oct 3, 2016
The Boston Blades will hit the ice for the final time this season as they visit the league champion Les Canadiennes de Montreal this weekend for a pair of games. Montreal is headed to the Clarkson Cup playoffs as the CWHL’s top seed, while the Blades wrap up their 2015-16 season this weekend.
Boston last played two weeks ago in Toronto, dropping both games to the Furies. While the Blades were shutout during Saturday’s game, Boston ended their scoreless streak on Sunday, with Dru Burns and Meg Myers scoring for the Blades. Boston goaltender Amanda Cariddi made her professional debut for the third period of Saturday’s game, and her first CWHL start Sunday, making 49 saves. Genevieve Lacasse made 18 saves during Saturday’s game, and is now 48 saves from 1,000 for the season.
Montreal was awarded the Commissioner’s Trophy as league champions this season with the best record in the CWHL. Les Canadiennes boast 3 of the league’s top scorers in Marie-Philip Poulin, Ann-Sophie Bettez, and Kim Deschenes, with Caroline Ouellette also in the top 10. Meanwhile, goaltender Charline Labonte leads the CWHL with a 1.64 goals against average and 15 wins.
Montreal’s Commissioner’s Trophy victory is their 5th in the CWHL’s 7 season, with the Blades winning the other two, including last year's. Montreal host the Toronto Furies in the opening round of the CWHL playoffs, while Calgary and Brampton will face each other. This weekend’s series between Calgary and Brampton will determine home ice advantage for the Inferno-Thunder series.
Key to the Weekend
Finish Strong – The Blades opened their season by splitting a series with the Toronto Furies. With their last games of the season this weekend, and a very strong showing in their last game against Montreal, a split of the weekend would be great momentum for Boston as the Blades enter a very important offseason.
