Blades Announce 2016-2017 Roster
Date: Oct 3, 2016
The Boston Blades will hit the ice for the first time since the CWHL All-Star Break when they take on the Toronto Furies this weekend. Saturday’s game, a special contest at Saugeen Shores, will take place at 4 PM while Sunday’s game is in Toronto at 1 PM.
Boston had last weekend off after the All-Star game and haven’t played since being shut out in their home finale against Les Canadiennes on January 17th . Despite the result, the Blades played their best game of the season, consistently pressuring Montreal throughout the contest and keeping the game within one goal until 5 minutes left in regulation. Blades All-Star goaltender Genevieve Lacasse made 92 saves on the weekend and now has 934 on the season - she is likely to break 1,000 this weekend. The Blades offense will need to support her, as they have now gone 300:54 without scoring. Boston’s last goal was Megan Shea’s teddy bear tally against the Furies on December 19th, 2015
Toronto dropped a 6-0 decision last weekend to the Brampton Thunder in their only contest since the All-Star break, and have dropped their last 7 contests. Despite their record, forward and All-Star captain Natalie Spooner is third in the CWHL with 25 points and 2nd in the league with 19 goals. Toronto goaltender Christina Kessler is 5th in the CWHL with a 3.52 GAA and 491 saves on the season, which is second to Lacasse’s 934.
The Furies and Blades have made a bet to benefit their local humane societies for Sunday’s game, with the losing team donating $20 CAD + $10 per goal scored during the contest. Join in the conversation on Twitter with the hashtag #BladesPuppyChallenge!
Forward Kristina Brown (Team Black/Chu), goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Team White/Spooner) and defensemen Tara Watchorn and Dru Burns (both Team White/Spooner) represented the Blades in the CWHL All-Star game in Toronto at the Air Canada Center on January 23rd. Team Black took the contest 5-1.
