The Pembroke Lumber Kings' Derek Varrin scored 2:05 into overtime to beat the Cornwall Colts, 5-4 (OT).
Although Pembroke was up by as many as two goals in the second period, Cornwall kept the game interesting by staging a comeback that ultimately fell short. The Colts got to within 3-2 on a goal by Tanner Spink at 3:13 in the third period.
The Lumber Kings were led by Varrin, who had one goal.
Pembroke excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances.
Pembroke also got points from Alex Gilmour, who also registered one goal and one assist. Pembroke also had goals scored by Brandon Zullo, Nicolas Vlahos, and Patrick Kyte, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Pembroke were Chris Minns, Tyler ONeill, Adam Beveridge, and Brett Horn, who each chipped in one and Johnny Kyte and Ben VanOoteghem, who contributed two each.
Cornwall's offense rang up 52 shots on the Lumber Kings' net.
The Colts were helped by Dean Derouchie, who racked up two goals. Derouchie scored the first of his two goals at 7:09 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Cornwall. Lawson MacDougall picked up the assist. Derouchie's next tally made the score 4-4 with 1:39 left in the third period. Matthew Morin assisted on the tally. Cornwall additionally got points from Spink, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Sebastian Dirven also scored for Cornwall. In addition, Cornwall received assists from Ross Craig, Tristan Conrad, and Jeremy McFarlane, who each chipped in one.
Boyd Diclemente rejected 48 shots on goal for Pembroke. The Lumber Kings totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 1-for-2 on the power play. Pembroke ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Colton Keuhl was ejected from the game. Brett Nichol made 22 saves for Cornwall on 27 shots. The Colts ended with nine minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major. For Cornwall, Shawn Baird was ejected from the game.
