Marist Hockey Extend's Gratitude Towards Fans
Date: Dec 13, 2018

January was a rocky month for the Red Foxes. Starting the month with two losses to CCSU and two cancelled games, Marist was finally able to pull out an important 3-2 victory on Jan. 29th away versus Sacred Heart.
Though hoping to start the second half of the 2015-2016 season with a bang, Marist was caught off guard in the first game back and was trounced 6-1 by the CCSU Blue Devils on Jan. 15. After such a brutal loss, Marist looked to regain their momentum and get a win in against Bryant University, but the Bulldogs unfortunately had to cancel the game that weekend.
Bryant’s game cancellation resulted in back-to-back games between Marist and CCSU, just one week apart. The Red Foxes hoped to recover from their previous 6-1 loss in the second matchup on Friday, Jan. 22 in Poughkeepsie. Marist played great in the first and second periods, going up 3-1 after 40 minutes. However, a strong Blue Devils third period tied the game 5-5 and sent the game into overtime. The Red Foxes heartbreakingly fell 6-5 after CCSU captain Matt Lis put the game-winner behind Justin Larkin just 67 seconds into the five minute overtime period.
The next game on the schedule was for Saturday, Jan. 23 away at Boston College. However, Winter Storm Jonas hit the east coast on Saturday, causing the game to be cancelled. Ironically enough, we did not get one flake of snow here in Poughkeepsie!
After going 0-2 and having two games cancelled, the final game of January against Sacred Heart suddenly became even more important for Marist to win. Though the Red Foxes handily defeated SHU 9-4 on Nov. 22, the team still focused on playing a strong game in Bridgeport, CT on Friday, Jan. 29.
It was a much tighter game than expected, with neither team scoring in the first period. Marist scored the first goal of the game 3:18 into the second period. Dan Roberts scored on the powerplay assisted by Justin Genga for Marist’s 1-0 lead. SHU would tie the game 1-1 a few minutes later but Marist was far from giving up. Conor Flynn scored on the play from Brett Kaiser to regain the Red Fox lead. However, with only four minutes to play in the period, the Pioneers tied the game once again.
An important third period was a scoreless physical battle until Justin Genga finally put one in behind Pioneer netminder Brandon Rozzi with only 2:47 to play in regulation. Marist was able to hold on and earn an important and spirit-lifting 3-2 win.
The Red Foxes have only five games remaining on the season, including three important SECHL matchups. Marist is away for both games this coming weekend: Friday at Siena - 9:00pm and Saturday at NYU - 8:30pm. Both games will be live-tweeted (follow @MaristHockey).
