Date: Jun 23, 2019

Playing the game of hockey is what every kid dreams about and being good at the game takes pratcice, determination and effort. one of the best things about our program is the many wonderful students we get to see and work with each day Owen Hunter is a great example of a student going out and having his athletics expand his horizons on and of the ice. This past spring Owen was able to be a part of Team Canada and Owen won a silver medal at the Deaflympics2015 in Khanty-Mansiysk/Magnitogorsk, Russia
The Deaflympics are an International Olympic Committee (IOC)-sanctioned event at which deaf athletes compete at an elite level.
Hunter, a defenceman who was born with sensorineural hearing loss (nerve damage) in both ears, was the youngest member of the Canadian team. Canada defeated the United States 4-2, Kazakhstan 14-0, Finland 7-1 and Russia 2-1 to reach the gold-medal game, where he fell 6-3 to the to Russians in the final.
“They were treated like professional hockey players and played with more than 5,000 fans in the stands,” said Laura Hunter, Owen’s mother. “It will be something that my son will always remember.”
Our program celebrates student Athletes like Owen who is member of our Blyth Academy Prep Hockey program and we look forward to seeing the many things he will do with his experiances in the game.
