Hamilton's big game bests Niagara Falls in 8-4 Welland win

Cole Hamilton had two goals and one assist to lead the Welland Jr. Canadians to an 8-4 victory over the Niagara Falls Canucks.

Hamilton's tallies came at 3:47 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Welland and on the power play 12:11 into the first to make the score 2-0 Welland.

Welland forced Canucks' goalies to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, totaling 36 shots and forcing 28 saves. Adam Dentico made 13 stops and Tynan Lauziere made 15. The Jr. Canadians put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Niagara Falls to score on any of its four power plays. Welland's goal total was higher than its season average. The Jr. Canadians average 2.8 goals per game. Welland got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

Welland also got points from Nathan MacDuff, who also registered one goal and one assist, Andy Paul, who also tallied one goal and two assists to lead the team in points, and Cameron Aitken, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Jack Fitzgerald also scored for Welland. In addition, Welland received assists from Matt Murphy, Derrick Low, Bradey Johnson, Adam Barron, and Jake Shaw, who contributed one each and Matt Martin, Ryan Miotto, and Thomas McLatchie, who each chipped in two.

The Canucks forced the Jr. Canadians goalie Chris Janzen to work between the pipes, taking 38 shots. Niagara Falls was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 28 penalty minutes.

The Canucks were helped by Matthew Marsden, who had one goal. Marsden scored 13:26 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Welland. Zack Lansfield provided the assist. Niagara Falls also had goals scored by Kevin Boyd, Evan Denley, and Luke Laurin, who scored one goal each. More assists for Niagara Falls came via Phillip Chadder, who had two and Taggart Ledyard, Frank Pucci, Scott Grieve, Austin Bottrell, and Cesare Caldaroni, who contributed one each.

Welland's Janzen stopped 34 shots out of the 38 that he faced. The Jr. Canadians incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors. Niagara Falls ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Patrick McCabe was ejected from the game.
