The Sarnia Legionnaires' Brad Yowart scored 1:01 into overtime to beat the Strathroy Rockets, 6-5 (OT).
Sarnia got the win with help from a great game by Brandon Layman, who had one goal and three assists. Layman scored 11:28 into the first period to make the score 1-1.
The Legionnaires forced Strathroy goalie Dane Gubbels to work between the pipes, taking 50 shots. Sarnia's goal total was higher than its season average. This season, the Legionnaires average 3.3 goals per contest. Sarnia got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game. The Legionnaires were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 24 penalty minutes.
Sarnia also got points from Yowart, who also registered one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Sarnia included Zack Vanderwal, Ethan Dupont, Eric Marsh, and Hunter Tyczynski, who each put in one. In addition, Sarnia received assists from Ryan Vendramin, Jordan Fogarty, Joey Zappa, Brendan Shagena, and Brock Perry, who each chipped in one.
The Rockets put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Sarnia to score on any of its five power plays. The Legionnaires were unable to stop Strathroy from sending pucks towards the net, and the Rockets eventually piled up 44 shots on goal. Strathroy outdid its season average for goals scored. The Rockets average 2.9 goals per game.
Strathroy was helped by Matthew Stevens, who had one goal and one assist. Stevens scored 2:59 into the third period to make the score 4-4. Dillon Saunders picked up the assist. Strathroy additionally got points from Noah Tooke, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Strathroy also had goals scored by Nick Griffin, Max Ewart, and Wesley Kelly, who scored one goal each. More assists for Strathroy came via Matt Laberge, Shane Bulitka, Jeff Williams, Codey McRoberts, and TJ Harris, who contributed one each.
Aidan Hughes recorded 39 saves for Sarnia. Gubbels rejected 44 shots on goal for the Rockets. Strathroy incurred 24 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
