Thomas Hanson gave Wisconsin the lead in the first period, and Peoria was never able to catch up in a close game that ended 3-1.
Wisconsin took over the lead for good with a goal by Hanson at 8:17 in the first period. A tripping call on Connor Boscaccy put Wisconsin on the penalty kill. Austin Lewis assisted on the tally.Wisconsin was led by goalie Max McConnell, who finished with 40 saves while allowing one goal. McConnell certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.56 entering the contest.
Wisconsin was paced by Russel Barone, who tallied one goal. Barone scored on the power play 5:58 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Wisconsin. A holding penalty on Levi Armstrong had put Wisconsin on the power play. Nathan Viberg picked up the assist.
Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 7:45 into the third period. Five fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.
Wisconsin forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 22.0 minutes per game Wisconsin had been spending in the box. Wisconsin put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Peoria to score on any of its four power plays. Wisconsin was held below its usual level of production. Wisconsin averages 5.4 goals per game.
