Huge game by Thompson boosts Chatham over St. Thomas, 6-1

Behind a great game by Austin Thompson, who had two goals and one assist, the Chatham Maroons defeated the St. Thomas Stars, 6-1.

Thompson scored at 1:38 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Chatham and again while 5:55 into the first to make the score 2-0 Chatham.

Chatham's penalty kill excelled, as the Maroons gave up zero goals despite allowing six power plays.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 11:53 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Chatham's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled eight minors and one major for 31 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 26.0 minutes per game the Maroons had been spending in the box. Chatham forced St. Thomas' goalies to work all game long, launching 58 shots and forcing 52 saves. Nikolas Dampier made 52 stops and Dan Black made zero. The Maroons stifled the Stars' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man.

Chatham additionally got points from Steven Beenackers, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Chatham also had goals scored by Declan Conway, Ross Krieger, and Michael Levesque, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Chatham were Mark Fratarcangelli, who had two, Ian Faubert, who had three, and Connor McKinnon, Dede Cato, and Michael Douglas, who contributed one each.

St. Thomas could not produce up to its normal offensive output. The Stars average 4.2 goals per game.

Cal Horvat also scored for St. Thomas.

Parker Butler made 18 saves for Chatham on 19 shots. The Maroons registered zero goals on two power play opportunities. Chatham ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Cato was ejected from the game. St. Thomas ended with 23 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major. For the Stars, Adam Keyes was ejected from the game.
