Date:  Source: CWHL: Boston Blades v2

The Boston Blades secured a playoff spot last weekend, and put themselves just two points out of first place following taking two games from first place Calgary Inferno. On Saturday, February 21, the Blades faced off against Brampton Thunder at Milton Academy.

The first period was fast paced, and the Blades got the scoring started out. Monique Lamoureux, assisted by Brianna Decker and Jordan Smelker, netted the first goal of the game. Shortly after, the Blades went on a power play that didn’t last long. Casey Pickett, assisted by again Brianna Decker, scored the Blades second goal of the game. Soon after, however, Brampton cut the Blades lead in half with Ellie Seedhouse’s goal. With just under one minute left in the period, Kacey Bellamy went to the penalty box. It wouldn’t take Brampton long to score, tying it up 2-2.

The Blades quickly got back their lead in the second period. Jordan Smelker got her second point of the game with her goal, assisted by Kaleigh Fratkin. The Blades showed fantastic control of the puck, rarely letting it slip into their defensive zone. Blake Bolden found herself in the penalty box, ending the second period with a Brampton advantage but a 3-2 lead.

The Blades weren’t done scoring yet. While on a power play, Rookie Brianna Decker scored, assisted by Jenny Potter and Jordan Smelker, putting the Blades on top 4-2. Shortly after, the Blades found themselves on another power play, unable to score. However, the Blades were put on another power play and Tara Watchorn scored, assisted by Brianna Decker, to extend the Blades lead to 5-2. At a last effort, Brampton pulled their goalie. This was ineffective, as Casey Pickett would score the empty netter, putting the Blades on top 6-2 which would be the final score.

Tomorrow at 12:30PM, the Blades face off against Brampton in the second of two games. This is the Blades final home game of the season.
