EAST MEADOW, New York – The New York Bobcats and Long Island Gulls are proud to announce the former forward Matthew Zay has signed with the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League.

Zay, 24, just completed his four-year career at Mercyhurst College of the Atlantic Hockey Association. He racked up 47 goals and 81 assists for a total of 128 points in 151 games played.

He now embarks on his pro career with the Falcons, which are the top affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

“Well it was kind of a quick turn around, our season ended on Saturday when we lost to RIT in the AHA championship,” said Zay.  “We went back to school that night, then Sunday morning I woke up to a slew of calls from my advisor and he said there were a few options.”

Zay decided to sign with Springfield after his senior season that saw him dress in 39 contests for the Lakers this season, recording 12-20-32 and a plus-three rating,

“That Sunday my advisor was talking with a few teams and eventually I spoke with Springfield and we decided that this was the best option for me,” explained Zay.  “They're in a playoff push and it’s going to be nice to potentially play some meaningful games”

He made his pro debut on March 27 at home versus the Worcester Sharks and put up four shots.

“[Springfield] likes my all around game. I play on both sides of the puck and have the ability to score and play physical,” he said.  “I'm just going to make the most of my opportunity and pitch in every way I can. Whatever they need from me I'm prepared to do.”

To date, the Glendale, NY native has skated in three games for the Falcons and registered eight shots on net.

“We are so proud of Matt and his accomplishments.  Since his time with the Gulls and Bobcats Matt has continued to excel in his hockey career.  Matt is a great role model for all of our young Gulls’ players, as he has shown what hard work and dedication can accomplish,” said Craig Doremus, head coach and president of hockey operations for the Bobcats.  “I wish Matt and his family nothing but continued success as he begins what I hope and believe will be a long professional career.”

The Bobcats and Gulls would like to congratulate Matt and his family on this wonderful accomplishment.
