Random Observations - Baseball IQ

Date:  Source: Babe Ruth Calgary Baseball

A few things that I noticed this week related to baseball IQ:

  1. First baseman holding the runner with runners at 1st & 2nd.  The runner at first base is not going to steal 2nd with a runner in front of them.  There is NO NEED to hold the runner and limit your defensive range.
  2. Base runner going 1st to 3rd on a ball that didn't leave the infield.  An INCREDIBLE display of base running instincts, this player was running on a hit-and-run and the ball was chopped over the pitchers head.  With the 2nd baseman charging the ball, the base runner didn't break stride around 2nd and moved up to 3rd on the put out at first.  Just as a note, this same player scored from second with 1 out on a soft base hit through the right side.  A great secondary lead and moving as soon as the ball was on the ground to the right side of the field helped him score half a stride ahead of the throw.
  3. Players not sliding.  Even at the AA & AAA level, I have still witnessed close plays on the base paths where runners are not sliding.  Not only is this dangerous, but it reduces your chances of being safe.
  4. Players turning to speak with umpires.  Umpires are human and none of us like to be embarrased.  If you have a question for an umpire ask the question quietly and do NOT turn to face them.  As soon as you turn and face an umpire to speak to them, everyone in the park knows you are questioning their call.
  5. An outfielder caught a fly ball with 1 out and a runner tagging at 3rd base.  Knowing that there were no other runners on base he "let it fly" and tried to carry his throw all the way to the plate while ignoring the cut man.  Missing the cut off in this situation doesn't give any other runners the opportunity to move up, so the outfielder displayed his high baseball IQ in trying to throw the ball all the way to the plate.
