Wildcats drop heartbreaker to Reading

Despite a stellar pitching performance by Ryan Whitt, the Wildcats dropped their 5th straight to start the 2015 season; this time a 2-1 loss to conference rival Reading. Whitt was pushed into a starting role after being used in mostly relief appearances through the first part of the season. Despite the unfamiliar role, the sophomore filled in extremely well by throwing 5 innings and allowing just one run. Sophomore Austin Cahill was the tough luck loser, giving up the game winning run in 1 2/3 innings of work.

The Wildcats opened up the scoring in the top of the second inning when Adam Schwegman drove in Sam Brumett from third base with a two out single. The one run almost stood up for Whitt as he kept the Reading hitters off balance until he ran into trouble in the 5th. Trent Perdue led off the bottom of the 5th with a single. After Spencer Kirby worked a walk, Sam Nutley laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt, moving both runners into scoring position. After an intentional walk, Whitt got Jacob Clements to pop up to the infield, leaving the bases loaded with two outs. However, Grayson Roberts walked on four pitches and the score was tied at 1. Whitt was able to induce a flyout to end the inning but the damage was already done. For the day, he only surrendered 3 hits in his five innings of work.

In the bottom of the 7th, Austin Cahill, who had come on in relief of Whitt, got two quick outs to start the inning. The game seemed to be heading into extra innings until Jacob Clements worked a walk. On the very next pitch, Clements stole second base, setting the stage for Grayson Roberts. One a 1-2 pitch, Roberts lined a shot into left field, easily scoring Clements from second and sending the Wildcats to another heartbreaking defeat.

For the Wildcats, Austin Cahill led the way with a 2 hit performance. The Reading Blue Devils were led by Grayson Roberts' 2 RBI performance. The Wildcats will look to bounce back with a home conference game against the Mariemont Warriors. Joey Gerbus makes his 3rd start of the season with the first pitch being set at 4:30.
