The Long Island Gulls U16 squad rebounded from a slow start to win the LIAHL championship game against New York Applecore.
After falling behind 2-0 early in the game, the Gulls got back on track, scoring the final four goals of the contest to win 6-3.
Applecore struck twice on the power play early in the first period, but the Gulls would eventually get one back, scoring just before the end of the period. Giancarlo Romano put the Gulls on the board with a long wrister after getting a beautiful cross ice pass from Thomas Finck.
Early in the second, the Gulls found the equalizer. After Jake Dima rung a wrist shot off the cross bar, Devin Heffernan batted the puck back on goal, and Kevin Wright tapped it in. Applecore hung tough and recaptured the lead less than a minute later.
It was all Gulls from there, as the club scored two in the 2nd and two more in the 3rd to eventually ice the game and seal the title.
The line of Heffernan, Wright, and Marko Cohen lead the offense with three goals. Daniel Kramer and Michael Conlin also scored. Goaltender Vinny Capezza stopped 23 of 26 shots.
Congratulations to the Gulls 16U team on winning the LIAHL Championship!
