SAN ANTONIO- Brandon Thomas pitched a complete game while Andrew Carmadella helped save his team from defeat with another clutch seventh inning hit to highlight Tuesday’s Texas Winter League play.

ALAMOS 4 PERICOS 4

The Alamos’ Andrew Carmadella’s triple with two outs in the bottom of the seventh drove in Ben Boykin to forge a 4-4 tie against the Pericos in the first game played at Missions Academy Field One.

Carmadella, who hit a 2-run home run on Sunday in the top of the seventh to give the Alamos a 5-4 victory against the Tejanos, greeted reliever Sho Nagashima with a line drive down the left field line immediately after Casey McMickle was relieved after 6 2/3 innings after walking Boykin on a 3-1 pitch.

The game was a see-saw affair throughout. The Pericos (5-3-1) took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Jason Merjano singled with two outs and went to third on an infield hit from Undre Smith made possible when Alamos starting pitcher Gilbert Berrera failed to cover first on a softly hit ground ball to first baseman Joseph Charles.

The top two hitters in the Pericos’ lineup then executed a perfect second to home double steal to give the Pericos the lead.

But the Alamos (5-2-2) took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning on a two out triple from Mike Shada to drive in Charles followed by a Boykin single through the middle.

The Pericos tied the game in the fourth when Will Chapman walked, went to second on a sacrifice from Chris Johnson, and scored on Thomas Shull’s single to left. Chapman then put the Pericos on top in the next frame when he hit a 2-run triple off Berrera in the top of the fifth.

Carmadella then began the comeback he finished in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly to right field that plated Charles Shapiro.

McMickle went 6 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and five walks while striking out four.

Berrera went five innings and allowed eight hits and three walks but also fanned six. Hikaru Ogawa and Cam Margaris both pitched scoreless innings for the Alamos.

CAPITALS 8 APACHES 2

Brandon Thomas threw a complete game in his first start of the season as the Capitals scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning to cruise to an easy victory at Nelson Wolff Stadium.

After the Apaches (3-6) scored the first run of the game after Kori Melo greeted Thomas with a leadoff double and Jacob Fabry drove him in with a single in the top of the first inning, the Caps lit up starter Fumitaka Sakaguchi.

Will Wurth began by reaching on an error from second baseman Julius Gaines. After Masanari Kato flew to centerfield and Wurth stole second, Connor Battaglia walked, setting the stage for Brian Haggett’s double to deep centerfield. 2-1 Caps.

Greg Toliver followed with a sharp single to left to drive in Haggett before Kazuki Nakayama hit a long triple into the corner in right field to score Toliver. Nakayama then came home on Shaun Pettit’s sacrifice fly to left for the final run of the inning.

The two teams traded runs in the second. The Apaches manufactured a run when Samuel Gonzales was hit by a pitch, went to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Kinnosuke Kamiya’s sacrifice fly to right.

The Caps (4-5) got the run back in the second on doubles from Wurth and Battaglia.

The game then became an efficient pitchers duel with Thomas allowing only one hit after the third inning. Sakaguchi (0-1), who would pitch four innings, allowing six hits, four earned runs, and two walks, also threw scoreless innings in the third and fourth innings before giving way to Yusuke Ione’s perfect fifth inning with two strikeouts.

But in the sixth the Capitals scored two more unearned runs off reliever Naoki Hashimoto. Hashimoto was greeted by Takashiro Kaneko’s single to left to begin the inning, and the substitute catcher went to second on a pass ball. After Wurth reached on Gaines’ second error of the day, Kaneko scored on a wild pitch as Wurth moved into scoring position with Kato up.

Kato then collected his second infield single of the game, advancing Wurth to third, where he would later score from on a wild pitch.

Thomas (1-0) went the seven inning distance and did not walk a batter. He allowed five hits and struck out three.

Kato, who entered the game with only one hit on the season, was the only player in the game with multiple hits (2).

TEJANOS 5 WRANGLERS 2

Jeremy Hall pitched a complete game five-hitter to best Chihaya Sakurai and give the Tejanos their third victory of the season against the Wranglers.

Hall (1-1) did not walk a batter and struck out five. Sakurai (0-2), meanwhile, surrendered three runs in the bottom of the third and allowed six walks and five hits in 4 2/3 innings, fanning four.

The Tejanos’ (3-6) Dillon Sauers collected two hits and now has five hits in his last five at bats. He would tie the game in the third with a hit.

Eric Garcia continued to climb out of his slump with two hits in a losing cause. Reid Hoffler also pitched 1 1/3 of scoreless relief for the Wranglers (5-3-1).

ALAMOS 3 WRANGLERS 3

The Alamos were able to stay in first place by tying the Wranglers in both teams’ second game of the day at the Missions Academy.

Both Bobby Orozco and Brandon Cowan pitched five inning complete games, allowing five hits. The Alamos (5-2-3) Cowan struck out six and walked only one, while Orozco walked one and fanned three for the Wranglers (5-3-2).

Phil Rowland’s 2-run triple briefly gave the Alamos a 3-2 lead after three before the Wranglers tied the game in the top of the fourth.

Aaron Wells of the Wranglers and Mike Shada of the Alamos both had two hits.

NOTE- No games will be played at Nelson Wolff Stadium tomorrow. The Pericos will play the Wranglers at 11 a.m. in the broadcast game from Missions Academy Field One, while the Capitals will be at the Apaches and the Tejanos will be at the Alamos on fields two and three, respectively.
