2015 TWL Signings
Date: Feb 28, 2015
SAN ANTONIO- Joshua Farrell and Justin Klipp were dominant while six different players, including Jack Morrow, hit home runs as the Texas Winter League reached the halfway point of their season on Saturday.
ALAMOS 5 - TEJANOS 4
Andrew Carmadella hit a 2-run home run in the top of the seventh inning off Forest Moore to keep the Alamos (5-2-1) in a first place tie and defeat the Tejanos, 5-4, Saturday afternoon at Nelson Wolff Stadium.
Moore (0-2) had been brought in the previous inning with two outs and the bases loaded and got heavy-hitting Rob Perrin to pop out to first, but hit Ben Boykin with a pitch leading off the top of the seventh before Carmadella hit his slam over the wall in left centerfield.
Carmadella’s heroics were necessary because of a 3-run homer Ryan DiMascio hit in the bottom of first inning off newcomer Mike Zouzalik that gave the Tejanos (2-6) the lead for much of the game. A spot starter brought in by Justin Klipp, the winner of the 2013 TWL championship game who was able to springboard that accomplishment into a two year career in the American Association, Zouzalik brought two seasons of professional baseball experience, including a year in the Texas chain, to the mound for the Alamos.
But Zouzalik was outpitched by Tejanos starter Rainey Martin, an unknown righthander with only one TWL appearance before the game and resume that probably peaked playing for NAIA St. Gregory’s.
Martin limited the Alamos to two runs in five innings, giving up five hits and walking two while striking out three hitters. Though he may have pitched up in the zone, which allowed Charles Shapiro to greet Martin in the first inning with a double to left center and then score on two fly balls, including a sacrifice fly from Boykin, he pitched well enough to give the Tejanos a 4-2 advantage before being lifted for Hiroki Taniguchi in the sixth.
But Taniguchi was wild, walking four hitters, throwing a wild pitch, and giving up an opposite field double to right to Conrad Woolsey. He only gave up one run thanks to the fact he picked Joseph Charles off first base for the inning’s first out, but had to be relieved by Moore, a former Mississippi State Bulldog who appeared in 20 games for the United League champion Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings in 2014.
Meanwhile Klipp (1-0) was inserted into the game in the fifth inning by Alamos manager Mike Pinto and was brilliant, allowing no runs or hits and walking only one batter.
Carmadella drove in three runs in the game. In addition to hitting his second homer of the year in dramatic fashion and to tie DiMascio for the league lead, he drove in a run with a ground out in the third inning.
For the Tejanos, Dillon Sauers doubled his hit total for the season with a perfect 3 for 3 line that included driving in Curtis Batten in the fourth inning off Zouzalik. The righthander from Austin gave up nine hits in four innings and four earned runs, though he did not walk a batter and struck out four.
The Alamos victory means Sunday’s 11 a.m. game at the Missions’ Academy against the Wranglers will be for first place in the TWL standings.
PERICOS 4 - APACHES 1
Joshua Ferrell continued his impressive pitching by throwing a complete game, retiring the final 13 batters he faced in a 4-1 Pericos (5-3) victory against the Apaches.
Though hit early when Kori Melo greeted him with a single to lead off the game, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a Tyler Latham single to left, Ferrell (2-0) would allow only one other hit, a third inning double to Latham, before settling down to stymie his opponent. Ferrell would finish with nine strikeouts on the day.
Pete Martinez was also effective, throwing a complete game as well and allowing only six hits in the process. But he gave up the lead in the bottom of the first when R.J. Perucki hit a 2-run double with two outs, then cemented his fate by giving up a 2-run homer to Andrew Mulato in the fourth inning. Martinez would finish with four strikeouts and walked only one batter, but it contributed to his downfall as it began the Pericos’ 2-run first inning rally.
Martinez (2-1) retired the last seven batters he faced.
Mulato was 2 for 2 from his ninth spot in the batting order.
WRANGLERS 16 - CAPITALS 8
The Wranglers (5-2-1) pushed across nine runs in the top of the fourth inning off previously untouchable Alex Mann to blow out the Capitals (3-5) in a six inning contest.
Initially down 6-2 after two innings, the Wranglers tied the game with four runs in the top of the third, highlighted by Jack Morrow’s 2-run home run off Mann. Morrow would finish 4 for 4 and drive in five runs to take over the TWL league lead in hitting with a .520 average. Morrow also leads the TWL in hits (13), doubles (6), and is tied with R.J. Perucki and Ryan DiMascio for the league lead in runs batted in (11).
Meanwhile Eric Garcia broke out of his 0 for 16 slump with a home run and two hits for the Wranglers.
Mann (1-1), who had struck out 10 batters in five innings in his previous outing, was bombed for 10 hits and 15 runs in a five inning start. He walked six and struck out three.
For the Capitals’ Brandon Thomas also was 4 for 4 with a home run off winning pitcher Misop Baynun (1-1).
The 46-year-old knuckleballer won his first game in his three year TWL career, allowing seven runs and nine hits but only one walk after walking nine in his first start of the season. He credits Skip Bradley, who runs the Missions’ Academy facility, for showing him a new grip on his knuckleball for his added control.
Kazuki Nakayama had two hits for the Capitals to raise his average to .478.
Reid Hoffler earned his third save by throwing the final three innings for the Wranglers, allowing one run and two hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
NOTES- Shapiro left the Alamos’ victory with an injured wrist in the first inning.
In other injury news, the Alamos’ Matt Orefice and the Apaches’ Chadd Flick have both been shelved with injuries to their throwing arms and are now starting to throw. They are hoped to return next week.
The Pericos’ Young Lee and Apaches Noaki Hashimoto have been having problems with blisters on their pitching hands.
Capitals outfielder Jeff Beckles has had a back injury that has prohibited him from playing in the field but is hoping to return on Sunday.
Matt Garza of the Pericos has had an elbow injury that has limited him to designated hitter duty as well.
Sunday’s games will represent the start of the second half of the regular season.
