Wingham beats Goderich 7-5 as McNeil gets hat trick

A hat trick by Ryan McNeil was the highlight in Ironmen's 7-5 win against the Goderich Flyers.

McNeil's first goal came 41 seconds into the second period. He then added goals at 3:36 into the third and at 5:17 into the third.

The Wingham Ironmen led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when Wingham's Holdyn Lansink scored at 9:46 in the second period to put the Ironmen up 5-2.

Wingham's offense rang up 37 shots on Goderich's net. The Ironmen found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, Wingham averages 4.5 goals per contest.

Wingham also got points from Lansink, who also racked up two goals and three assists and Alex Kuntz, who also had one goal and two assists. Jeremy Ross also scored for Wingham. In addition, Wingham received assists from Brett Brophy, who had one and Darren Kerr, who had two.

The Flyers bested their season scoring average. Goderich has scored at the pace of 2.6 goals per game during the current campaign. The Flyers could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 34 minutes in penalties during the game.

Goderich was helped by Marcel Fohkens, who tallied two goals and one assist. Fohkens scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 16:28 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Goderich. The Flyers had gained a power play chance when J J Harland was whistled for unsportsmanlike conduct. Chase Duckworth assisted on the tally. Fohkens' next tally on the power play made the score 5-4 Wingham with 6:04 left in the second period. Morgan Benniwies provided the assist. Goderich additionally got points from Duckworth, who also registered two goals and one assist. Goderich also got a goal from Taylor Helesic as well. Other players who recorded assists for Goderich were Jordan Pepper, who had one and Joseph Dykstra, who had two.

The Ironmen took out Jake Trentadue after he had made 12 saves and installed Ben Nelson in goal, where he finished with six saves and the win. Wingham incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Nathan Watson recorded 30 saves for Goderich. The Flyers registered two goals on four power play opportunities.
