National Championship – Finals Recap
News - April 5, 2011

The Mid-State Mustangs are the first Boys team from Pittsburgh to ever win a National Championship. Overall local teams go 1-3 in USA Hockey National Championship Games.

The Mid-State Mustangs defeated the Florida Jr. Panthers 7-4 in the Tier II 16 and Under USA Hockey National Championship game. The game was close throughout, but the Mustangs were able to come away with the victory. William Power (2 goals), Daniel Moscone (2 goals, 1 assists), Stefan Horgas (l goal, l assist) and Samuel Lafferty (2 goals, 2 assists) all had big games for the Mustangs. The Mustangs dominated throughout the entire tournament finishing with a 6-0 record and averaging over six goals a game.

The Pittsburgh 98's fell to the Indianapolis Racers 5-2 in the championship game on Sunday.  Aiden Beck and Roman Kraemer scored the 98's two goals.  While the 98's finished in second, it was still a great tournament for the team in San Jose, California as they finished the tournament 5-1.

The Allegheny Badgers also finished the tournament 5-1, losing to the Richmond Royals 4-2 in the championship game. The Badgers were down 3-0 at the beginning of the second period but battled back in the second to make it a one goal game thanks to Dillon Weaver and Daniel Maier.  The Royals scored early in the third and the Badgers were unable to recover.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Adult Sled Hockey Team fell in the Championship game against the Colorado Avalanche Sled Hockey Team. The score of the final game was 7-2. Daniel McCoy scored both goals for the Penguins, but that was not enough to give them the victory. The Penguins had a very goal weekend at Nationals and came away with the Bronze Medal.

Congratulations to all of the ‘Pittsburgh’ based teams that qualified for the tournament, this was the best year yet for Pittsburgh hockey – having four teams reach the Championship game.
