Mount Forest hangs on, beats Goderich 3-1

The Mount Forest Patriots beat the Goderich Flyers, 3-1, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Mount Forest took over the lead for good with a goal by Trevor Hughson at 6:52 in the first period. Doug Costanzo picked up the assist.

The Patriots got the win behind a great game by Hughson, who had two goals and one assist.

Goderich was stymied by Mount Forest's netminder John Nixon, who stopped 49 shots during the victory. Nixon certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 3.48 entering the contest.

The Patriots excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in eight chances. The Flyers were unable to stop Mount Forest from sending pucks towards the net, and the Patriots eventually piled up 41 shots on goal.

Mount Forest also got points from Costanzo, who also grabbed one goal and two assists. In addition, Mount Forest received assists from Shawn Lantz, who had one and Luke Richardson, who had two.

Goderich forced Mount Forest goalie Nixon to work between the pipes, taking 50 shots.

The Flyers were led by Curtis Taylor, who scored the team's only goal. Taylor scored 13:31 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Mount Forest. Joseph Dykstra provided the assist.

The Patriots totaled 35 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 1-for-4 on the power play. Mount Forest ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Mitch Betts was ejected from the game. Pat Do rejected 38 shots on goal for Goderich. The Flyers incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors. For Goderich, Andrew Gooding was ejected from the game.
