The Walkerton Hawks were firing on all cylinders against the Goderich Flyers, and when the final buzzer sounded Hawks emerged with an 11-0 win.
Walkerton was sparked by Matt Shields, who finished with one goal. Shields scored 16:03 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Walkerton. Carter Franks provided the assist.
The Hawks forced Goderich's netminders to work without much rest, ripping 36 shots and forcing 25 saves. Pat Do made 12 stops and Nathan Watson made 13. Walkerton excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. The Hawks' defensive play was more effective than usual against the Flyers. Walkerton averages 2.3 goals allowed per game. The Hawks outdid their season average for goals scored. Walkerton averages 5.4 goals per game. The Hawks got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed four goals during the game.
Walkerton also got points from Franks, who also registered one goal and two assists, Ryan Hamelin, who also grabbed one goal and two assists, Brendan Welsh, who also had two goals and one assist, and Skylar Robertson, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Walkerton also had goals scored by Brett Coulson, who had three and Nathan Kramer and Chris Gillman, who each put in one. More assists for Walkerton came via Tyler Cunningham, who had three, Mitch Borden and Josh Deyell, who contributed one each, and CJ Arthur, Lauchlin Elder, and Austin Russell, who each chipped in two.
Goderich racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with nine minors and one major for 63 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 26.0 minutes per game the Flyers had been spending in the box. Goderich did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. The Flyers average 2.3 goals per game.
Tristan Lewis made 21 saves for Walkerton on 21 shots. The Hawks incurred 64 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. For Goderich, Brandon Priestap, Liam Melady, and Marcel Fohkens were ejected from the contest.
