Melady leads Goderich over Wingham, 5-2

Liam Melady was all over the ice for the Goderich Flyers, as he tallied one goal and two assists in Goderich's 5-2 win over the Wingham Ironmen.

Melady beat Mike Ratchford with a shot 6:48 into the second period on the power play to make the score 2-1 Goderich. The Flyers had gained a power play chance when Jared Weishar was whistled for holding. Nathan Watson picked up the assist. Melady dished an assist on Brandon Priestap's goal that made the score 1-0 Goderich at 10:53 into the first period. He added another helper on Mitch Kuik's goal that made the score 3-1 Goderich at 8:45 into the second period.

Goderich's penalty kill excelled, as the Flyers gave up one goal despite allowing seven power plays.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 20:00 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Goderich forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and one major for 61 minutes in penalty time. The Flyers had been averaging 24.0 minutes in penalties per game. Goderich forced Wingham's netminders to work between the pipes, racking up 31 shots and forcing 26 saves. Ratchford made 19 stops and Ben Nelson made seven. The Flyers outdid their season average for goals scored. This season, Goderich averages 2.4 goals per contest.

Goderich also got points from Priestap, who also registered one goal and one assist. Goderich also had goals scored by Taylor Helesic and Cody McIntrye, who each put in one. In addition, Goderich received assists from Nick Gowing and Jordan Pepper, who contributed one each.

The Ironmen's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 11 minors and two majors for 72 minutes in penalty time. Wingham surpassed its season average of 27.0 penalty minutes per game. The Ironmen were held below their usual level of production. Wingham puts an average of 4.4 pucks into the net per game. The Flyers were unable to stop the Ironmen from sending pucks towards the net, and Wingham eventually piled up 32 shots on goal.

The Ironmen were led by Matt McCracken, who grabbed one goal. McCracken scored 16:54 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Justin Jacklin assisted on the tally. Wingham also got a goal from Alex Kuntz as well. More assists for Wingham came via Ryan McNeil and Jordan Skerrett, who each chipped in one.

Goderich's Watson stopped 30 shots out of the 32 that he faced. The Flyers registered five goals on 12 power play opportunities. Goderich ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Cody Kropf was ejected from the game. For Wingham, Jacklin and Jeremy Ross were ejected from the contest.
