Ryan McNeil netted a hat trick to lead the Wingham Ironmen over the Goderich Flyers, 7-1.
McNeil got on the scoresheet 19:47 into the first period. He then added goals at 12:42 into the second and at 4:41 into the third.The game was close after the first frame, but Wingham banged in four goals during the second period to put the victory out of reach for Goderich.
The Ironmen pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 48 penalty minutes.
Wingham's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on 13 Goderich power plays. The Ironmen kept the Flyers' goalie busy throughout the game, and Pat Do made 24 saves on 31 shots. Wingham bested its season scoring average. The Ironmen have scored at the pace of 4.6 goals per game during the current campaign. The defensemen of Wingham were also effective in Goderich's zone, and came away with two goals.
Wingham also got points from Brett Brophy, who also registered one goal and four assists, Holdyn Lansink, who also finished with one goal and one assist, and Matt McCracken, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Wingham also got a goal from Jordan Skerrett as well. In addition, Wingham received assists from Justin Jacklin and Alex Kuntz, who contributed two each.
The Flyers racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and one major for 39 minutes in penalty time. Goderich surpassed its season average of 26.0 penalty minutes per game.
The Flyers were led by Joseph Dykstra, who scored the team's only goal. Dykstra scored 8:14 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Goderich.
The Ironmen's Mike Ratchford stopped 17 shots out of the 17 that he faced. Wingham registered five goals on 11 power play opportunities. The Ironmen ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Travis Bender was ejected from the game. For Goderich, Cody McIntyre, Eric McPhee, and Marcel Fohkens were ejected from the contest.
