The Goulbourn Hornets Midget Girls #2 team braved a snowy drive to start their AA-division play in the 2013 Mike O'Connor Memorial Basketball Tournament in Gloucester held Feb 8-10. Their Friday night opening game saw the Hornets battle back several times from a deficit but came up short in a 29-27 loss against host Gloucester Wolverines #2. Saturday held a better result for the Hornets with a whole-team effort to handily defeat Hawkesbury Selects 51-25 and ensure a place in the semi-finals.

In the semi-final Sunday morning, Goulbourn faced Ottawa South to whom they had lost in the gold medal game in the Chris Paulin Tournament. This time the Hornets were victorious maintaining a slight edge throughout an evenly fought game on the way to a 35-29 win. This set up a re-match in the final against the home Gloucester Wolverines squad. With the team determined to avenge their Friday night loss, the outsized Hornets came out and played the 3 best quarters of their season to date. They showed their grit as they went on an offensive tear while also playing shut-down defense on their way to building a 20 point lead by the end of the 3rd quarter. However, a basketball game is 4 quarters and Gloucester fought back in the 4th with a strong run of their own, leading to an exciting finish. But the Hornets would not be denied and held on for a 45-42 final to win the Gold medal. This adds to the silver medal they earned at the Chris Paulin Tournament in December making them two for two in medal finishes.

The Hornets' coaches were very impressed with the teamwork and energy displayed throughout the weekend. Each player contributed on the score sheet at some point during the weekend and all brought energy and focus to their play. Well done girls!
