
The second weekend of February, the Goulbourn Hornets Major Midget #1 girls basketball team won silver medals in the Gloucester Wolverines Mike O'Connor Memorial Tournament in Orleans.
Despite a major winter storm, the Friday night draw of the tournament went ahead as planned with the Hornets taking on the visiting Sudbury JAM. The Hornets matched Sudbury's physical play and emerged with a 52-43 victory to start the tournament.
On Saturday afternoon the Hornets played a consistent game from tip-off to final buzzer and downed the Nepean Blue Devils #1 by a score of 59-35. The last game of preliminary action saw the Hornets meet a very strong Cornwall Lions squad. The game went right to the wire with Hornet Chloe Brownlee draining a long-range three point shot with no time left on the clock for the 59-57 victory!
Early Sunday morning the Hornets played the Capital Xelles #1 squad in the first semi-final of the tournament. The Hornets beat the Xelles 56-41 and earned a spot in the afternoon's championship game. The tournament championship featured a rematch between the Hornets and the Cornwall Lions. The Hornets gave it their best, but came up on the short side of a 48-40 final score to earn tournament silver. Chloe Brownlee was awarded the team MVP for her outstanding play.
