
Silver Lining for Hornets
The Goulbourn Hornets Major Bantam boys basketball team recently took silver in both the Gloucester Wolverine Boys Invitational Tournament and the Eastern Ontario Division 1 Basketball Championships.
The Hornets started their run the first weekend of March. In the opening game of the Gloucester tournament, the Hornets battled to a one point win over Dawson, one of the top triple A basketball clubs from Montreal. In the second game of pool action, the Hornets defeated Brookwood 58-42. The Hornets played Cambridge in the third game of pool play. Cambridge had the hot hand and walked away with a 57-50 victory. Goulbourn finished pool play with a late day 68-37 victory over the West Land Lakers.
The strong start advanced the Hornets to semi-final play on the Sunday which featured a rematch versus Cambridge. The Hornets made some defensive adjustments and took to the floor. The defensive double teams proved effective and the Hornets rebounded with a 61-39 win. The Hornets then faced the host Gloucester Wolverines in the tournament championship. The Hornets battled hard, but eventually went down 60-46 to claim silver. Hornet Corey Johnson had an outstanding weekend on the court. He was selected as the Hornet’s player of the game in each and every game of the tournament including the championship final.
The second weekend of March, the Hornets took part in the Eastern Ontario Basketball Association Division 1 Championships at South Carleton High School in Richmond. The Hornets met the Nepean Bobcats in semi-final play. The Hornets avenged two previous losses this season with a 50-41 win and advanced to the championship game.
The Hornets met the Gloucester Wolverines in the championship final. The Hornets kept the game close, but could not pull ahead and came out on the short end of the 55-47 final score to claim silver.
The Hornets are coached by John Johnson, Kim Currie, and Colin Anderson and are managed by Marian Corak.
