Bronze at Blessed Sacrament for Major Bantam Hornets
The Goulbourn Hornets Major Bantam boys' basketball team took home division 2 bronze medals in the Blessed Sacrament Yellow Jackets 2010 Invitational Tournament held the weekend of April 9th – April 11th, 2010.
Friday evening, the Hornets got off to a sluggish start versus the Welland Warriors. The Hornets struggled throughout the first half to trail 23-12 at the half. The team played a much improved second half, but couldn’t overcome the deficit and lost the game 46-34.
Saturday morning, the Hornets met the Oakville Vytis squad. The Hornets played hard right from the opening tip and cruised to a 52-34 victory. The Hornet’s third game of the tournament was versus the Tecumseh Saints. The Hornets built a14 point lead throughout the first three quarters of play. Tecumseh went on a run during the last quarter, but was forced to foul to stop the clock late in the contest. The Hornets hit an incredible 10 for 12 from the foul line in the quarter to preserve the victory and win 53-43.
Point differentials were needed to decide which teams advanced to the a-side finals on Sunday. The hot hand from the foul line on Saturday evening gave the Hornets the wildcard spot in the division 2A semi-finals by one point. The Hornets played the Oakville Venom in their semi-final game. The Hornets got off to a slow start to trail 8-21 after the first quarter and 17-27 at half. The Hornets could not recover and lost 62-54.
The semi-final loss against Oakville sent the Hornets to the bronze medal game on Sunday afternoon the Welland Warriors. At half, the score was 18-19 for Welland. The Hornets played a solid second half to win 48-35 and claim the division 2A bronze medals.
