Ontario Jr B League are pleased to announce the 2014 Regular Season Award Winners. The annual awards were voted on by each of the 26 members General Managers (GM) in 5 categories. The categories are Rookie-of-the-Year, Most Valuable Player, Most Valuable Defensive Player, Most Sportsmanlike Player and Coaching Staff-of-the-Year. The OLA Jr B League as gives out Scoring Leaders and Top Goaltender awards not voted on, but statistically confirmed.
Since there are few Eastern Conference or Western Conference Inter-Conference games throughout the regular season, the voting by General Managers are on the awards within respective Conference’s.
The 2014 Rookie-of-the-Year for the Eastern Conference is Dawson Theede (Clarington Green Gaels) while the Western Conference Rookie-of-the-Year is Brendan Welsh (Owen Sound NorthStars).
Dawson Theede is 17 years-old; Height (HT) 6-3 and Weight (WT) 197 lbs offensive left-shooter finished 3rd on the Green Gaels squad 19 games (GM), 35 goals (G), 34 assists (A) for 69 points (Pts) adding 10 power play goals (PPG), 2 shorthanded goals (SH), 2 Game-Winning-Goals (GWG) and 49 Penalty Minutes (PIM).
Brenden Welsh led Owen Sound in most offensive categories. Welsh is 17 year-old; HT 6-2, WT 180, offensive Right-shooter leading all Owen Sound players in GP20, G43, A57, reaching the 100-Pts plateau his 1st full season adding PPG 15, SH 1, GWG 1 and PIM 38.
The 2014 Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the Eastern Conference is Fred Hartley (Gloucester Griffins) while the Western Conference MVP is Jack Fitzgerald (Welland Generals).
Fred Hartley, 20 year-old; HT 5-9, WT 150 lbs, offensive Left-shooter finished with a Jr B League leading 61 goals, 49 assists for a Jr B League leading 110 Pts. Hartley also attends Ottawa University) in GP20 adding PPG 17, SH 2, GWG 4, PIM 0.
Jack Fitzgerald, is in his 4th season with Welland. HT 6-2, WT 180, offensive Right-shooter leading all Welland Generals scorers in GP20, G43, A58, reaching the 100-Pts plateau for the 1st time in his career by adding PPG 8, SH 5, GWG 1 and PIM 24.
The 2014 Most Valuable Defensive Player (MVDP) for the Eastern Conference is Kason Tarbell (Akwesasne Indians) while the Western Conference MVDP is Kyle Isaacs (Six Nations Rebels).
Kason Tarbell, 18 year-old; HT 6-0, WT 190, defensive Right-shooter. Finished the 2014 Regular season GP14, G5, A6, Pts 11 with PPG 1, GWG 1 and PIM 24.
Kyle Isaacs, 21 year-old in his final year of Junior, HT 6-0, WT 185, transition Left-shooter, Finished the 2014 Regular season, GP19, G24, A46, Pts 70 with PPG 2, SH 2, GWG 2 and PIM 45. Isaacs also scored the Rebels franchise record goal of 328 on June 21st vs Elora goalie Clayton Nolan.
The 2014 Most Sportsmanlike Player (MSLP) for the Eastern Conference is Aaron Forster (Gloucester Griffins) while the Western Conference MSLP is Mike Rybka (London Blue Devils).
Aaron Forster, 18 year-old; 3rd year offensive Right-Shooter. Finished the 2014 Regular season in GP20, G36, A71, Pts-107 adding PPG 14, SH 2, GWG 2 and PIM 8. Forster was traded from Nepean Knights to Gloucester Griffins in a Multi-player trade on April 25th.
Mike Rybka, 19 year-old, HT 5-11, WT 185, offensive Left-shooter. Finished 2014 Regular season in GP20, G38, A49, Pts-87, adding PPG 8, SH 3, GWG 1 and PIM 10. Rybka is a 4th player and Captain of the London Blue Devils.
The 2014 Coaching Staff-of-the-Year for the Eastern Conference is Gloucester Griffins while the Western Conference Coaching Staff-of-the-Year Niagara Thunderhawks.
Gloucester Griffins Coaching staff consist of Head Coach-Jeremy Kearns; Assistant Coaches-Brett Perras, Todd Chapman and Francis Dostie; General Manager-Dave Smith and Trainer-Gerry Ferguson.
Niagara Thunderhawks Coaching Staff consist of Head Coach-Randy Chrysler, Assistant Coaches- Roger Chrysler, Dale Henry, Kyle Schmelzle; General Manager-Al Janzen; Trainer-Eric Overstrom and Equipment Manager-Dave Fauzey.
The 2014 Scoring Leader for the Eastern Conference is Fred Hartley (Gloucester Griffins) in GP19 with 110 Pts (61 Goals, 49 Assists) adding PPG 17, SH 2, GWG 4, PIM 0.
The Western Conference Scoring Leader is Brandon Anger (Windsor Clippers) in GP19 with 111 Pts (57 Goals, 54 Assists) adding PPG 12, SH 3, GWG 5, PIM 26.
The 2014 Top Goaltenders for the Eastern Conference is Patrick Pollock and Liam Wynne of the Green Gaels with 131 Goals Allowed while making 473 saves in 20 Games. The Western Conference Top Goaltenders is Chase Martin, Mitch Henhawk and Briley Miller of Six Nations Rebels with 100 Goals Allowed while making 580 saves in 20 Games.
OLA Jr B League was founded in 1965 and is government by the Jr B Council. The OLA Jr B League consists of 26 teams with an Eastern Conference (12 teams) and Western Conference (14 teams).
OLA Jr B League competes for the J. A. MacDonald Trophy with the winner of OLA Jr B League playoffs competing for the Canadian Lacrosse Association National Championships with the winner claiming the Founders Cup.
OLA Jr B teams have won 38 of 41 Founders Cup titles since 1973. In 1972 the Founders Cup was awarded to the Jr C Champions.
