CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Locked in as the third seed in the South Division in the 2014 NAHL Robertson Cup Playoffs, the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees entered the final weekend of the 2013-14 regular season with one main question – who would be their opponent in the divisional semifinals?
The Bees got their answer Saturday night. After finishing the regular season with a pair of wins this weekend, the Amarillo Bulls won the South Division title. The Topeka RoadRunners also won both of their games this weekend but finished two points behind the Bulls in the standings, setting up a Nos. 2-3 battle against the Bees in the divisional semifinals.
The RoadRunners will have home ice advantage against the Bees in the divisional semifinals, which will get underway next week. The complete schedule for the Bees-RoadRunners series will be revealed this week. Stay tuned to www.KillerBeesHockey.com for details.
The Bees will enter the playoffs coming of a split against the Corpus Christi IceRays this weekend. The Bees defeated the Rays 2-0 Friday, but suffered a 3-0 loss in an essentially meaningless game Saturday at AmericanBank Center in Corpus Christi.
Tony Roisum put the IceRays up 1-0 at the midpoint of the second period when he scored a power-play goal on a wrist shot from the right faceoff dot. Lucas McDiarmid and Travis Maxwell assisted.
Corpus Christi doubled its lead to 2-0 early in the third period when Nick Monfils set up West Michaud in the slot. Jesse Shelton tacked on what was officially scored as an unassisted empty-net short-handed marker to close out scoring.
RGV goalie Nick Schmit (Fargo, N.D.) made 20 saves on 22 shots Saturday in the loss, one night after collecting his sixth shutout of the season in a 30-save effort. IceRays goaltender Forbes Ploszaj denied all 28 RGV shots he faced Saturday.
Corpus Christi scored one power-play goal on five chances Saturday while the Bees went 0-for-10 on their man-advantage chances.
