BRUNETEAU CAPTAINS BEES TO WIN OVER ICERAYS

Date:  Source: NAHL: RGV Killer Bees

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Tyler Bruneteau (Omaha, Neb.) scored the only goal his team would need in the first period, and goaltender Nick Schmit (Fargo, N.D.) did the rest by denying all 30 shots he faced to lead the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees to a 2-0 victory over the Corpus Christi IceRays Friday at AmericanBank Center.

Bruneteau gave the Bees the lead with a little less than six minutes remaining in the first period when he scored from the low slot. Bruneteau was unguarded on the goal, smacking the puck high into the twine on a pass from Ben Greiner (Newport Beach, Calif.), who was positioned behind the end line.

Alesksi Luhtalampi (Rauma, Finland) also assist on team captain Bruneteau’s goal, which was his first since Jan. 17 after he missed roughly six weeks of the season due to an injury.

The second period went scoreless, thanks in large part to Schmit. He made several big saves in the second frame, including a pair on Tony Roisum, the first of which came early in the period on a point-blank shot and the second of which came a few minutes later during a late-developing 2-on-1.

Schmit was sharp again in the third period, refusing to let the IceRays force a tie. Joe Llaurado (New Berlin, Wis.) went on to tack on an empty-netter with 68 seconds remaining in regulation when he fired the biscuit into the open cage a step in front of the center red line.

Schmit picked up his 17th win of the season and his sixth shutout Friday. His 30 saves were the second most he made in a single game this season. Ben Myers absorbed the loss making 16 saves on 17 shots.

Neither team scored a power-play goal Friday. The IceRays went 0-for-4 on the man-advantage while the Bees went 0-for-2.
