MIHL Announces 2014 David Mannino Scholarship Recipient

The Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League (MIHL) is pleased to announce Colin Walters from Midland High School is the 2014 recipient of the David Mannino College Scholarship associated with the MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase.  The $1,000.00 college scholarship is awarded to a student-athlete who participated in the 2014 MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase and met all of the selection criteria. Colin was selected by a random draw of qualifying senior players and was presented on Friday, February 7, 2014.  The scholarship will be to an accredited college or university and applied to the Colin’s tuition for the 2014-2015 academic year.

On winning the award Colin exclaimed, “I am honored to be the recipient of the David Mannino Scholarship Award for 2014 and I want to thank both the Mannino Family and the MIHL for the award.  To be associated with a scholarship which honors the memory of such an accomplished individual is truly humbling.   I would like to thank Coach Brown for nominating me for this award.  He’s supported me during my career and has been a good role model.”

Colin, the son of Greg and Kris Walters, is maintaining a 4.27 weighted (3.78/4.00) GPA at Midland High School.  Next year his plan is to attend University of Michigan to pursue a degree in the College of Engineering.  Colin volunteered with the Blessed Sacrament Church providing time to the Youth Outreach Program and also went on Mission Trips in the United States the past two summers.  He was nominated for the award by Midland High School Head Coach Jeff Brown.  Colin, a goaltender, has been on the Midland High School team for three years.  Brown commented, “Colin Walters is a great person and an inspiration to his teammates.  He will be missed next year by his teammates and coaches”.

The winning of the award just added to the great time Colin and his teammates had at the MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase. “It is a great experience to be in the same place with so many talented hockey players and great competition.  It gives you the opportunity to watch the high caliber teams and see the out of state teams”, he stated.

To honor the life of David Mannino, the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League (MIHL) renamed the MIHL Showcase Scholarship – It is now the David Mannino Scholarship and will be awarded annually during the MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase.  The decision to rename the scholarships in David’s name came easily, “David’s life exemplified the goals and objectives of the scholarship – he was a student athlete and a young man with great moral character”, explained MIHL President Andy Weidenbach.  The scholarship is privately funded and does receive any proceeds from the MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase.
