Hockey Operations Suspended Indefinitely
Date: May 1, 2014
Zych has only been apart of the Surge for eight games, but has racked up 4 assists in his young tenure as a Surge Defenseman. The soft-spoken Zych (pronounced zick) says little off the ice, so little in fact, that he’s left Surge fans bemused, craving to know more about the rookie. Fans took to the poles this week, leaving us with no choice, but to GET TO KNOW EVAN ZYCH!

The self-proclaimed great dancer spoke about growing up in a small town, “It is a farming community, where everyone knows everyone. There’s a gas station with no gas, a general store, and a couple stop signs too.” After being asked who the most influential people were in his young hockey career, Zych talked about his family, “I have huge hockey fans on both sides of my family, but my parents and brothers are definitely the most influential. You all have always been there for me," Evan says to his family back home, "Thanks for everything, I owe it all to you.”
Zych cited his nomination for the Hobey Baker award back in college as his favorite hockey moment thus far, stating that he never thought he would have the fortune of adding something so prestigious to his resume.
What is your most embarrassing hockey moment? “That’s an easy one. When I was playing in Missouri, it was my first time in the pro’s, and we were in the playoffs playing rapid city. I went out for the pregame skate and was slipping, falling all over the place, losing my puck, stick, everything.” Evan quietly chuckled as he continued, “Lying there looking at the ceiling I wondered what was going on, and then I realized it. I still had my skate guards on.” Wearing a big grin, Evan told us it was hands down the most embarrassing moment in his career. “I still can’t believe I did that.”
Do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions? “Yep,” Zych quickly said, “I always put my gear on left to right. I tape my stick the same way every time, 23 times every time, no more, no less. In warm-ups, I can’t leave the ice until I shoot the puck into the net and it makes some kind of noise, like hitting the post or something.”
What are your nicknames? “Z” “Zicker” (Former Surge fan favorite Kyle Fletcher roomed with Evan in school, calling the Defenseman, “Lord Voldemort” telling his roommate he found him to resemble the fictional character.)
What is one thing you couldn’t live without? “A pet for sure. They are always happy to see you, never a downer, I just couldn’t see myself without a pet.” Zych told us he has a Dutch sheep dog back home named Angus.
If you could be in a movie what movie would it be? “Batman for sure, I’m a big batman fan, and I would definitely be him in the movie.” Adjusting his beanie, Evan went on to impersonate the superhero almost perfectly. After impersonating the famous hero and singing the chorus to “The Fox (What Does the Fox Say)” we continued the interview.
What is the most played song on your iPod? “Pour Some Sugar On Me” by Def Leppard. “I really like ‘The Tragically Hip’ a Canadian band, and I also like driving with the windows down listening to country, like Darius Rucker and Eric Church.”
Do you have any phobias? Biting his lip, Evan admitted his fears, “Spiders, I can’t stand em. I also don’t like heights. I can fly, but I can’t be on top of a building or something and look down.”
What do you do in your down time? "I like to read, autobiographies are probably what I read most. Stories about guys defying the odds or doing something great is usually what catches my interest.”
The laid back Zych admitted to being a prankster, and told us that while he has yet to perform high jinks on his Surge teammates, they should definitely keep their heads on a swivel for the remainder of the season. Evan also admitted to being bad at any sports video games, but amazing at Guitar Hero, regularly conquering songs on expert. In his younger days, Zych played the recorder, the only instrument he can play. Evan also told us he doesn’t buy or send cards for birthday’s and other occasions, but rather writes letters, which he says not a lot of people do. When asked about his phone, Evan leaned back in his chair and said, "Oh my God, I hate texting. I have an iPhone, but it usually stays at my apartment. I'd rather talk to people face to face, plus I can't even figure out to connect a laptop to the T.V."
Fan Questions:
Myra Pockets asks: How many ties do you own? “Oh [laugh] yeah, the ties. Geez, down here I probably have 15 and back home probably 25. Which for a guy my age, probably exceeds the norm, but I with a lot of ties, you won’t have to keep buying new shirts. You can just swap the ties in and out.”
After being initially told he of his fan awarded selection this week, Evan smiled and said, “I mean I’ve only been here for three weeks, so being selected so soon is a good feeling.” As fans continue to make Evan Zych feel welcome, the rookie will continue making a difference on and off the ice.
