The Bulldogs (11-2-1) entered Saturday night's game with a depleted lineup and somehow pulled off a 10-9 OT win over the previously undefeated Green Gaels (11-1-2).
The Bulldogs were without Michael Licata and Connor Brown going into the game and Brendan MacDonald left the game early in the first period, which left the Dogs short on the offensive side of the ball.
Dustin Hanzelka was superb in goal for the Bulldogs stopping 54 of the 63 Gaels shots he faced which included all 9 shots fired his way in the extra frame.
The game was tied 5-5 entering the third period but the Gaels came out firing and connected for three goals in a span of just 51 seconds early in the period. Just past the halfway point of the period, the visitors struck again building an 8-5 lead.
As they say, cue the comeback.
In front of the largest home crowd of the season, with the shot clock winding down, Luke Laidlaw fired a desperation shot towards the Gaels net that found it's way past goaltender Eric Pigden giving the Dogs new life. Mikey MacDonald would score just 26 seconds later to make it 9-7 with 6:34 to go in regulation.
With 4:23 remaining, it was again Luke Laidlaw scoring to draw the Dogs to within a goal.
Brandon Clelland's game tying goal off a rebound with 2:02 to play brought the Bulldogs' faithful at Alcott Arena to their feet as the Dogs had scored four goals in just under five minutes to claw their way out of a deep hole.
It didn't take long for the home side to build on their third period momentum as Mikey MacDonald broke the 9-9 tie with his third goal of the game just 1:27 into OT. Dustin Hanzelka slammed the door shut for the entire 10-minute overtime period to give the Dogs a 10-9 win.
The win by the Dogs over the Green Gaels was the first in the regular season since a 7-4 home victory on June 5, 2005. Way back then, the Dogs were led by the likes of Mike Dube and Travis Bland with Mike Falkiner serving as the head coach.
On Friday night, Halton Hills traveled to Newmarket to face the Saints and came away with a 17-10 win. After falling behind 5-3 in the first period, the Dogs ran away with things. Luke Laidlaw equaled Travis Bland's team record by recording 11 points in the win. Bland set the record back in 2005.
Next up is the third and final regular season meeting with the Mimico Mountaineers on Thursday night at Alcott Arena at 8pm. Saturday night, the Dogs will again be at home as the Mississauga Tomahawks visit Alcott Arena for an 8pm game.
