St. Louis Park, MN - The Benilde-St. Margaret's Red Knights delivered an impressive 9-1 win over the Moorhead Spuds Friday night at the St. Louis Park Rec Center. It marked their first of back-to-back games leading into the St. Louis Park Holiday Classic later next week. Spencer Naas had a five point night as he notched a hat-trick and added two assists to propel his team to the win and a 6-2-1 record on the season.
Naas scored his team's second goal during at 9:38 of the period that included a 21 shot first period. In the process, the Red Knights took a commanding 4-0 lead. The Naas goal at 9:38, represented his 100th career goal. When asked about scoring 100 goals in his high school career, Nass said it wasn't anything he particularly thought about.
"Probably not, it wasn't even a number I really thought about gong into my freshman year," Naas said of his milestone goal. "I started to score and it was something I started strive for and I was lucky to get my 100th tonight."
The Red Knights did not stop the goal scoring surge as they added three more in the second period to balloon their lead to 7-0. Nate Meyer also added a pair of goals in the Red Knight effort Friday night and Chase Jungels dished out three helpers in the win. Mark Kaske had a goal and and assist as Zack Hale and Carter Roo also scored in the Red Knight effort.
Ryan Bischel turned aside 13 of 14 shots to pick up the win in goal. In search of a solid 51 minute effort, the Red Knights delivered that against the Spuds as they out-shot Moorhead 42-14 for the game. The Red Knights were perfect on the penalty kill as they killed off all four chances against them.
Naas and his team knew they were going to have a challenge over the next two days, and as a team, felt as thought the 9-1 win over the Spuds was a step in the right direction.
"It was huge," Naas said of the win over Moorhead. "We thought we played well for bits and pieces of the Maple Grove game but didn't have the solid three period effort we need o be successful. Tonight, we needed to put together a three solid period against Moorhead and we did that. It was a step in the right direction and we have a chance to continue that tomorrow with Duluth Marshall."
The Red Knights play host to the Marshall School, Duluth Hilltoppers Saturday afternoon at 2:45pm.
