D1 wins in overtime, sweeps series with Temple to start calendar year

The West Virginia ACHA D1 hockey team defeated Temple once again, capping off a comeback by scoring their fourth straight goal in overtime to win 4-3 and sweep the first series of 2023.

With just 32.1 seconds left in the first period, Temple scored to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

Temple then doubled their lead five minutes and 25 seconds into the second period, and added a third with 5:14 to go in the second period,

But the Mountaineers responded a minutes and 11 seconds with a Dan Pfalzer goal, assisted by Jake Moleski and Isaac Jones.

Pfalzer then scored his second goal of the game with 9:15 left in the third period, making the score 3-2.

And with 1:11 left in the game, Pfalzer got a hat trick to tie the game at 3-3, with Moleski on the assist again, to send the teams to overtime.

The Mountaineers then won it in overtime when Camille Marcoux set up Jake Kosinski to win it with 36 seconds left in overtime

WVU head coach Shane Buckley said the team did great to keep fighting after being down three goals

"It's a good feeling, it's one of those ones where things are not quite going our way, even though I thought we were playing well,their goalie made a couple of nice saves, hats of to him, to be 3-0 down in the middle of the game and stick with it, extremely proud of the group right now"

 

​The Mountaineers are back in action next Friday when they face the Lehigh Mountain Hawks at Hagerstown Ice & Sports Complex.
