D2 wins in overtime to sweep George Washington

The West Virginia Mountaineers D2 hockey team got another overtime win, winning 6-5 against the George Washington Colonials at Morgantown Municipal Ice Arena.

 

The first period did not go how the Mountaineers would’ve hoped, as GWU scored goals with 12:25, 10:55 and 39 seconds left in the period to go up 3-0 into the first intermission.

 

And two minutes and 48 seconds into the second period, the Colonials added a fourth goal.

 

A power play have WVU goal, with Ben Murphy and Nathan Panchisin setting up Mitchel Ducalo with 4:08 left in the period.


 

Panchisin and Murphy connected on another power play goal shortly thereafter, with the latter assisting the former three minutes and seven seconds later to make it 4-2.

 

However a third period West Virginia power play resulted in a George Washington goal two minutes and 22 seconds into the period.

 

The Mountaineers answered with 15:01 left, as Panchisin and Ducalo assisted Stankiewiicz and made it a one-goal game two minutes and 35 seconds later as Ben Murphy scored, assisted by John Sabol.

 

And with 2:56 left, Chace Shepard tied it up at 5-5, with Nicholas Mohardt getting the game-tying assist.

 

The game went into overtime, where Mark Stankiewiicz scored an unassisted goal on a breakaway three minutes into overtime.
